Craft Your Own (Beta!)

Previews · Nov 07, 2013

With the launch of our new Theme Tweaker, one of our goals was to make it easier, faster and more fun for users to create a great looking site for their community. Our new color schemes feature helped achieve this, and packed much of the customization up into ready-made bundles to choose from for each theme.

With all changes we make to our site, we ask our users to voice their opinions and let us know what they think, and yesterday those who love customization spoke up! While the new Theme Tweaker will certainly work great for many of our users, those who want more settings to tinker with without using CSS got left with too little options.

So today we're releasing an early beta version of Craft Your Own, an editor you can use to create your own, unique designs. This editor has all of the options available from the prior theme editor, along with several new ones!

For now this is only available to themes created prior to the theme tweaker update. To access this editor you can go to the Sites tab on the themes page and load up the theme from your site, if it was created prior to our Theme Tweaker, it will load with the new Craft Your Own UI.

* Being released early means this may have a few extra bugs and usability issues we'll be working to correct.

As always we love your feedback, so please share your thoughts below in the comments =)

all i can see here is just some custom layout , i cant create my own UI ,

for example i want to combine CREY layout for banner with PODER layout for Menu Bar . it would be better if i can create my own Menu Bar design or else like before this new tweaker .

for CSS , i dont really understand bout it -_- , i need to learn it , but it would be awesome if shivtr make some tutorial or CSS Maker .

nice work on this new tweaker btw :)
Master of Blood ·
I really liked one of the new "bundles" but I needed the background of the columns to clear so you could see the wallpaper better. Since I couldn't do this I kept my prior theme. *note* I do not know how to use CSS.
Felandis ·
Props to Shivtr for listening to feedback and acting so quickly on this.
Ren ·
Much better, thank you!
Sturm ·
Well why POLL/S dont work, like they do before ?
Staff
8 Toes ·
If you mean showing polls on side blocks, you can now edit the block and select from any open poll to show there; the benefit with this method is you can now have multiple poll blocks showing different polls if you like =)

I'm still trying to find which category changes the "Forum Sections" color. Our site is dark-themed, so white backgrounds for the Forum sections and the Calendar days of the week, stands out like a sore thumb. I can do -some- CSS, but I'd rather just to be able to change something so simple, so easily in the "Create your Own" system. If anyone can give some constructive insight into this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

Dark Arc ·
You guys never seem to let me down :P
Kathadus ·
The new themes are great, however I feel a very high lack of customization. We now have 7 themes to choose from as to which I seem to only be able to change the background, add a banner on some of them and change font size and color of some headers. The lack of customization without using CSS. I also like the "Create your own" By clicking somewhere in the builder to change colors ect. incorporate the old customization system to the new one and we have a hit! Also, more themes would be great :)

More themes will be coming =)
MagicDemon ·
Thank you VERY much for bringing back a legitimate editor. This helps greatly, but I still cannot fix the subheader of my side boxes.

A few suggestions for the beta:

- Add the ability to change the background colour of the subheaders.
(Mine is currently solid white, while the rest of my page is very dark.)

- Add an option for "None" on the button border type, as it is on other border types. Borders make the buttons look silly.

- Add the padding back, so we can properly adjust things inside the boxes.

- Add an option to change the size of the side-box Calendar itself, or the padding in that specific box, so it fits inside the box correctly without ruining the positioning of other boxes.
Aetheriana ·
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the problem with the sub headers color. My site is dark as well.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Hi MagicDemon,

Hmm, subheader for side boxes? The side boxes should just have a header, content and footer.

Could you perhaps link me to your site and point out the color issue there and what it should be =)
MagicDemon ·
The side-box content has subheaders, for things like the Event Calendar.

http://sinsofsarim.shivtr.com

As you can see in that link, the subheader in the right pane sidebox (Calendar) is white, or light grey, where it should be a very dark grey to match the surrounding graphics. Is it possible to add a feature to adjust the Calendar settings themselves? The Calendar seems to be the only sidebox which uses a subheader mask anyway, so this would be more easily done if it was able to be adjusted separately from other items.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Ah, if you edit the Side Table header it changes that (its the last element at the bottom of the side panel)

It currently does not update in the preview due to a bug, but if you change it and refresh the page you will see it change, then can apply it to your site =)
MagicDemon ·
They're already set to dark colours, but they appear white every time they're applied.
MagicDemon ·
Scratch that last comment -

If you're having problems with your subheaders, you have to change the colour of it, apply it, then revert it back to the old colour and apply again. Perhaps it's some sort of bug?
Sade ·
Quite some time ago you mentioned something along the lines of Wireframes. I think it's that what people are really looking for.
Some kind of drag-and-drop editor to create the basic layout of the site for instance. I can image people would love to have a site without being stuck with the header-and-some-columns preset that is present now...
This is a drastic change, but I for one would be willing to wait for that and I guess a lot of others would as well.

Keep this up Shivtr.
You're still one of the best hosting companies I've ever worked with :)
wiccan999 ·
This new editor, is perfect. Any way we can upload our tweaked themes to a public section for people to use?
Avyel ·
Yes, please! (I imagine this will happen once you're out of beta with it, but the sooner the better!)
Avyel ·
We need to be able to change the font color for the site header, if we're not using custom banner. The white text doesn't show up against everything. But THANK YOU for working on this.
MagicDemon ·
Under Banner options, the option for "Color" is the text color. "Fill" is the background.
Avyel ·
Eventually found that. Can I suggest we rename that field "Text" or "Text Color?"
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Thank you for listening to us
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
This is much better
Sv1501st ·
yes thank you ....
ArcTic™ ·
Don't like this at all really. I can't figure out how to change the color of the text. It's not really create your own theme. It's more like slightly change someone else's. You guys should also make it so changing the theme does not reset the background image or banner. I have no clue where my files are on my HDD.
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Dude, you have to edit the site theme, you don't make a new one, its better than the original.
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
you can change the text color
MagicDemon ·
The new beta is actually far easier to deal with than the old theme editor. To be quite honest, it's almost the same thing as the old one. The only difference is, the padding changes are relative, where if you use "10px" to change it, it moves 10px from top and 10px from either side. This isn't really a bad thing, but it'd be nice to have a bit more range of movement with padding.

It honestly is better, though. When you want to edit, go to the "Site Admin" wrench, then "Themes," then "Sites" and click "Load" on whichever one you're interested in editing. It shouldn't remove any images unless you remove them by clicking on them in the editor.
Staff
8 Toes ·
The padding works the same as CSS now:

  • With just one value such as 10px, it applies it in all directions
  • With two values such as 5px 10px, the first applies top and bottom, the second applies right and left
  • With four values such as 5px 10px 0px 15px, it applies in order to top right bottom left

=)
Avyel ·
As for the text color, as people have pointed out elsewhere, it's just the "color" option in most the fields. They really need to rename that "text" or "Text Color".
Darisper ·
I was really, really, REALLY mad yesterday beyond my own comprehension.
But today, I'm not.
Thank you for realizing your mistakes, even if my site's calendar still looks like poop.
MagicDemon ·
The option for Side Table Header will allow you to change that. I had the same problem.
Darisper ·
I fiddled around with that, but nothing happened. I don't have the original color on-call either.
Staff
8 Toes ·
There is currently a bug with the Table Headers in this editor, it does not update in the preview, if you set a color then refresh the page you'll see it is there though, and then you can apply it =)
Darisper ·
Ohhhhhhhh, I see now. That worked. Thank you for the reply.
Staff
8 Toes ·
=)
ArcTic™ ·
Love the customize your own, but you should be able to click on things and change the color. BUT, I can't figure out how the heck to access this beta. I've worked so hard to find it.
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
For now this is only available to themes created prior to the theme tweaker update. To access this editor you can go to the Sites tab on the themes page and load up the theme from your site, if it was created prior to our Theme Tweaker, it will load with the new Craft Your Own UI.

- I got this directly out of the message
ArcTic™ ·
I was also working on my site theme and all of a sudden, it crashed my site. Nø†-F££liN-Ða-Lø\/£
Staff
8 Toes ·
Apologies, this was likely not due to the theme editor, we fixed a bug from the update where new menu items could not be added; for a few minutes when that got pushed live it caused an error for some sites.

It should be fixed though, if you still have an error for your site please post the link and I'll take a peak =)
Darisper ·
Hi again, I know this probably isn't the right place to ask but I didn't see any forum-things anywhere. Would it be possible for someone to erase all the posts in my guild site's shoutbox? There's over 20 pages and deleting all the messages manually would take a considerable amount of time.

http://thorianore.shivtr.com/
Darisper ·
Adding an auto delete-all option for shoutboxes may be a nice addition to site editors, too. wink wink.
Avyel ·
I wonder if deleting the shoutbox from the site and then re-adding it would clear it?
Darisper ·
It doesn't, unfortunately. I tried that before I posted.
Jambert ·
Any chance of a resize drag on the CSS editor, sat looking at:

background: url(http://s3.m

-webkit-box-shadow: 0 1px 4
-moz-box-shadow: 0 1px 4px
box-shadow: 0 0 4px rgba(0,

No benefit on using the in-built browser editor when you can't have a full view of the CSS.
Staff
8 Toes ·
There should be a scrollbar shown at the bottom to scroll right if you need =)

We plan to add word-wrap to the CSS field well, there are still a few bugs with it though so its not enabled yet; when that's added it should make it easier as well =)
Jambert ·
Horizontal scroll is awful, same with text wrap for a code editor as well. I Guess I'll just stick with copy pasting in from Sublime then...
fiktion ·
This is great. Thank you for amending this. Is is possible to add border type to the options? none, solid, dotted, dashed again? I'd like to remove the border around my menu buttons.

Thanks! great work and thank you for listening to your community.
Avyel ·
A couple of the fields have a border option, but agree they're needed more places.
Avyel ·
BUG REPORT:
There's a problem with the wallpaper today I didn't notice as present yesterday, perhaps a recent bug. If you scroll down, there's a white void below the applied wallpaper, even if you select "fixed" in the wallpaper option. The image doesn't move, but the big white void DOES!
I see it on multiple people's sites so it's not just me.
Embermyst Project

EDIT:
Noticed just now that this void does not always appear. Perhaps half the time I go to the page.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Apologies this was a temporary bug that got pushed live momentarily while we were fixing some layout issues; it should be fixed now.

If you still notice it however please let me know =)
Aetheriana ·
I've looked through all the comments on here so far, and nothing has solved my issue. I'm still trying to find which category changes the "Forum Sections" color and the Calendar days of the week color. I'm wondering if I'm having a problem because I'm using one of the old themes that I tweaked? We really like the theme was have and the new (7) choices don't fit our style at all. If anyone can give some constructive insight into this problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

http://www.crimsonfury.shivtr.com

Also, a link to the Shivtr forums on the upper navigation bar would be VERY helpful, instead of scrolling to the very bottom of a page to click "Help."… and why can't i just use my Shivtr log-in for the forums?
Staff
8 Toes ·
To do this you would change the Table Header and the Side Table Header colors; note that due to a current bug in Craft Your Own the changes will not show in the preview, but if you refresh the page they do =)
Aetheriana ·
Thank you! Didn't realize you had to refresh the actual theme editor page. For some reason I was thinking something else. *brainfart*
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
This is a completely unrelated question, but can 8-Toes get on any clan site, and have the same permissions as a member?
Kaylir ·
Oh my god how do I turn this off, it's fucked up -all- the custom coding I've put on my website.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Responded to your email on this and hopefully got it all sorted out with you =)
MagicDemon ·
I know I posted this in another message, along with some other things, but I'm just gonna pop this up here to compile a list of suggestions.

- Seriously, though - Padding? Lol

I've had to stretch my page to almost 100% screen fill (ruining the point of a background image) because the padding on the left/right of my main content boxes is like 30px. Very shitty.
Staff
8 Toes ·
If you scroll up you'll see I responded to your message on padding above; its still as flexible as before, but works more like css now; read that and you should see how it works =)
MagicDemon ·
I see. I hadn't realized you could add more than one value. But I was more suggesting that we have the ability to pad the content boxes themselves, as there currently doesn't seem to be an option to add any values to them at all.

Thanks for pointing me toward your other post, though. I wouldn't have noticed it, as it was a reply in someone else's original :P
MagicDemon ·
Ahh, scratch that. It's in the image bit of the sections.

Thanks for the help, 8 Toes. I think I'll be able to stop being a nuisance for now. :)
nerrianah ·
Cant believe how happy I am with the new craft your own option, our website looks nice again now as I was able to fix the stuff new update broke ^_^.

There is however something I miss from the old tools. If i remember correctly, we were able to click on an element on the website and a window with options to that element opened up, it was a lot faster getting to edit it than trying to scroll trough all options to find it :)

In anycase, thank you to responding so quickly to users wishes! <3
ArcTic™ ·
Don't like this anymore lel. I changed to crey and now I can't edit it more than a few tweaks.
Selaya ·
The OP states that for now these advanced tweaking options are limited to the legacy Relic themes only
Silverhallow ·
The UI is more simple, but the tools and options this system offers are worse than before.
ArcTic™ ·
I think you guys should have made shivtr 2.0 and left the option for 2.0 and left the 2.0 themes. It would give users more choice.
Miss ·
How can I make all the white panels more transparent?

halo.shivtr.com
Staff
8 Toes ·
The scrime theme does not support transparency for the boxes, but you can try the Glare theme which does =)
Kiz ·
Overall, I like the changes. There's still a lot to get used to and I'm sad that I can only have nine "tweak" saves (any chance on upping that number?), but I think it's fairly user-friendly. I'm still experimenting with it and learning how much CSS freedom I have, but overall it looks good.

My suggestions:
Movable header graphic type
Right now we can do center, left or right -- which is probably fine most of the time, but I think allowing people the option to move the text to the bottom right or top left would be a good addition, if possible.

Public User-Created Themes
I agree with the request to have public (sharable) themes again. Add my vote to the tally. ;)

Public User-Created Theme Filer or Better 'Search' Option
As must as I loved the public themes, it really was a bit of a pain to navigate. People seemed to spam it with their saves, often saving the same theme multiple times (perhaps they just didn't realize they could save themes "privately"). This was unfortunate because some of the user-created themes were really well done but got buried under multiple versions of "Bad Theme." We were able to sort by popularity and 'likes' before, and that helped to cut through much of the spam, but it would be great to also be able to sort by theme author, etc. Or maybe create a separate library for public themes that are super popular or have X amount of likes..?

"Private" Guild Themes
I would LOVE to see an option to share an "unapplied" theme between site admins for the same guild site. I think it would be great if someone else in my guild could create a site theme and the GM or myself could look at it and possibly change it, etc., BEFORE applying it to the guild site.

Or just give guilds their own private "archive" of site themes that can be viewed, edited and applied by any member with site admin permissions.

Provide a basic CSS guide
You had one of these as a site theme in the old Shivtr and I know it gave me a lot of design ideas -- I would bet if another guide like that existed it would inspire others. For anyone who may not remember, there was a public theme created by 8Toes (I think) that basically showed people how to move their user status bar, create transparencies, change the color of weekend days on the calendar, etc. I think a very basic guide about the small tweaks that people can make to their site by adding something like this:

a:link { text-decoration: none; font-weight:bold;}
a:hover { text-decoration: underline overline; font-weight:bold;}
a:visited { font-weight:bold;}

...would be handy for anyone unfamiliar with CSS. Plus it would help the rest of us who DO know CSS to know what the names of some of your elements are. Like ".box .header" to create ".box .header { font-size: 16px; font-weight:bold;}" ;)

Anyway, thanks for doing all this. I imagine it was a TON of work and time for you guys to transfer from the old shivtr to the new and it really does look great. :)
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
I agree with everything
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
I would love Public User-Created Themes again. Add my vote too.
Star ·
Not a big fan of the theme tweaker. I really like the old theme editor, it had a few bugs but it over all allowed me so much in depth customization that I found it fun just to play with even if I didn't need to update the site really.

So far, I am not too crazy with the tiny bar on the right side of the screen for the new theme tweaker, but maybe with enough time I will get used to it? In the beta, I for sure like all the extra options, so I really hope that is finished. Although I am sure it is a bug, the way the thing keeps scrolling back to the top after every change I make it pretty annoying, so hopefully that is fixed soon. Gets kinda boring scrolling down again after every new change I make!
Wolfiy ·
Well, the ablility to edit the old-style with more options is nice, but i'd like to see the same level of editing on all the styles. For one, CSS isn't newbie friendly as an editing option, so having bars and buttons makes it miles simpler. Two, the ability to adjust transparency on themes such as Galac would make for interesting visuals on a sci-fi clan site!
Ginius ·
The old system was so much better.
So many bugs in the new one like bacground image still being displayed when we disable it, banner not getting adjust to the image size and so on.
There are not enough parameters to tweak, and even in this very little number, the most important are like not working or not working as it should.
Really annoying...
I don't even understand why, when such a release is made, the old system is not working as well to still be able to do some stuff the old way when the new one is not working.
Oh and the fact that all my previous registered themes disappeared is really nice too.. had like 12 of those, all disappeared (there might be a way to get them back, looking for it atm but without success so far).
Anyway, bottom line is that this new tweaking them system is:
- bugged
- has not enough options
- doesn't allow to use the old system
Hope the old system comes back, and fast !! I need to make some Xmas themes for my guilds and this crap is in the way :(
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Dude... did you even read or try out the whole craft your own (beta) at all? And you CAN get your old themes back. Also if you read it, you would've seen this - * Being released early means this may have a few extra bugs and usability issues we'll be working to correct.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Hi Ginius,

If you email support@shivtr.com and make a request we can restore your user themes for you (just request which ones, or all, and they can be added back) =)

Cheers,
Ginius ·
@Beast: you're probly the one who doesn't know how to read.
It's been said that if you haven't sent a message to get back your old themes within a few days period, you can't get those back so please get off your high horses and stop acting like a freakin fanboy.
At least 8 toes understood what I said and replied accordingly.
And about the being released early, I'm a QA engineer and I know fully well how things are supposed to be when releasing a new feature, rule number 1 is to make sure that the customers can get what they could before until we can be sure that the new feature is working as expected .
When the new feature is working as expected, then we can go one step further and delete the old feature (it's called regression testing, even if in that case it can be a bit tweaked to match this particular field).
The create your own thing is good in that way but still incomplete imho, you can change what you've created in your old themes, but not what you didn't. The parameter you didn't use at that time won't be available this time.

@8 toes: thanks for the info, I'll send an email asap. This was my main concern, and I'm glad to be able to get those backs.
Any info if the css feature will be available to free accounts in the future?

Cheers
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Well sorry, It's just that I know some people would jump to conclusions and not read it all. Also, I just hate when people say that the old Shivtr was better, and I get it's an opinion, I just like Shivtr 2.0 better, it allows a lot of customisation for my old site themes, and it just all looks so much cleaner, sleaker, and more well organised.
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Is it possible i can get all my old themes back, without emailing? I would email, but it says I need to log in to Yahoo, but I don't have a Yahoo, and I'm using my mom's email address for Shivtr, since I don't have my own.
Staff
8 Toes ·
Sure I restored all your old themes to your account =)

[note that we have a limit of 9 user themes now, so you'll need to clear away a few to make more]
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
Thanks, I might not make more though, but if I do, I'll delete some.
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
But why is there a limit?
Ula Vii ·
I notice you keep "tweaking" things behind the scenes. My users are reporting a problem with comments on events. Comments on news posts seem unaffected.

The problem is that when you have more than one page of comments the paging controls no longer work.

An example of comments on events not working is here, this Thursdays Rogue Squad raid (21st November). If the link doesn't work then you can just click it in the event calendar at the top of the homepage. At the time of me writing this there are 14 comments, the first 12 are visible but the link for page 2 does not work, nothing happens when you click.

On the same site, multiple pages of comments on a news post still work, as you can see here.

At the moment the only "solution" I can think of is to delete the first page of comments but then people joining the conversation later will not know what the others were talking about!
Staff
8 Toes ·
Hi Ula,

Thanks for reporting this, this is now fixed =)
Ula Vii ·
The link for page 2 of comments is like this:

http://strokemywookie.com/tour?commentable_id=5106826&commentable_type=EventInstance&controller=events%2Fcomments&event_instance_id=5106826&page=2&view=comments

I think the problem is the "tour" variable but there's nothing I can do to change that as when I try to test changing "tour" to "comment" in the address bar I get "This action must be performed with javascript or our API."
Ula Vii ·
Found 2 cheats:

  • Post a new comment, then it takes you to the end of the comments, that works as long as you only have 2 pages. If you have 3 or more then you can only cheat to the last page.
  • Use Firefox Developer Inspector and change "tour" into "comments" then click the link.
Ula Vii ·
Working now, thanks for the tinkering to fix the tinkering ;)

I must say I'm not a fan of this editor from a non-site owning member. I usually do the layout themes for my guild and when I do I would make it public or they would give me the rights long enough to apply the layout. So from my point of view I can't access old layouts or use the editor on these old layouts as I have no rank. I miss the customization that I could do. I feel very limited on these new themes.
Jasmin ·
I tried to make another website but I'am having difficulties with the new setup. When I try to go back to my old website, i can see this "Beta!" thing and i can edit every thing. But this feature is not available on the new website that I created.

Where can I find this "CRAFT YOUR OWN (BETA!)" where i can edit everything (like status bar, menu bar, etc.) just like before?

You can check my newly created website. dd.fw.shivtr.com

Hope you can help me as soon as possible.

Thanks and more powers to shivtr.com!
AYS'•Ṕӈᴀɴҭøӎ.™{EpPfc} ·
I think for now, you can only edit everything if your site was made before the update, any new sites are limited. But I think the full CREATE YOUR OWN THEME will come out allowing you more options.
Bintus ·
I am happy to have the craftable web site however I am finding that not all the changes to the elements get save. They revert back to the default colours etc.
For example: I change the fonts and the font size and click save, save it as a theme and when I refresh it has reverted back to the default font and font size. Another example is the background colour - I can change the background colour, save etc. refresh or even apply and it has reverted back to the default colour of white. Not really great when you want a dark colour.

I've tried some CSS line in my own craft. The display site change based on my CSS under Theme Tweaker Page. But when I open the site as the guest the display doesnt changed at all.

I just adds CSS for background and title. Here's the code.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
body.relic #banner, body.classic #banner, body.sky #banner, body.coffee #banner .container, body.open_air #banner .container{
background:url("http://203.124.104.138/archieves/img/_r1_c1.png") no-repeat;
background-position:-50px -120px;
}
body.open_air #banner hgroup{
visibility:hidden;
}

This is where our ad is shown that supports the free plan; its likely hidden if you have an ad blocker.

Cheers,

I'm having an issue where CSS changes to our site are shown in the theme preview but not on the actual site. All CSS has been saved, what we did was remove the default site name so it would not show on the custom banner. Also we modified the menu bar to have a new hover colour scheme. The site is http://reminiscence-eu.shivtr.com/

I don't really understand the multi image thing? Would it be possible for you guys to make a tutorial on such things.
